Choosing between these three destinations depends on whether you want a high-rise resort experience, a walkable beach town, or a bohemian jungle retreat. While they are all located on the same stretch of Caribbean coast, the atmosphere in each is distinct.

• Best for Swimming: Cancun. The water in the Hotel Zone is that iconic, bright turquoise color with soft white sand. Because of the way the coast curves, many Cancun beaches are protected and offer much calmer swimming conditions than the often wavy shores of Tulum.
• Best for Families: Cancun. For those traveling with kids, Cancun’s massive all-inclusive resorts are hard to beat. They offer the most robust kids clubs, water parks, and organized activities. I recommend Playa del Carmen if you prefer a walkable town with easy access to grocery stores and condos.
• Best for Couples and Honeymoons: Tulum. This is the most romantic and photogenic of the three. The small, eco-chic boutique hotels located right on the sand offer a level of intimacy and “barefoot luxury” that you won’t find in the larger resorts of Cancun or Playa.
• Best for Foodies: Playa del Carmen. I love the Tulum dining scene for its mix of high-end jungle spots and cheap street food, but for most people, Playa del Carmen ticks more boxes. While Tulum is trendy and Cancun has great local gems downtown, Playa offers a larger variety and concentration of restaurants. You can walk to hundreds of excellent eateries, from high-end Italian to authentic taco stands, without ever needing a taxi.
• Best for Snorkeling: Playa del Carmen. This is the primary hub for the ferry to Cozumel, which has the best reef snorkeling in Mexico. It is also centrally located between the Cancun underwater museum (MUSA) and the turtle-filled waters of Akumal.
• Best for Nightlife: Cancun. If you want the massive, Vegas-style clubbing experience with acrobats and world-famous DJs, Cancun is the place to be. Tulum offers a different kind of “cool” nightlife centered around jungle parties and beachfront mezcal bars.
• Best for Walkability: Playa del Carmen. The center of town is almost entirely pedestrian-friendly. You can walk from your hotel to the beach, the shops on Fifth Avenue, and dozens of restaurants in minutes. Cancun and Tulum both require bikes, taxis, or buses to get around effectively.
• Best for Day Trips: Playa del Carmen. Its central location makes it the best base for exploring the region. You are halfway between Cancun and Tulum, making it easy to visit Xcaret, the Cozumel ferry, Akumal, and several major cenotes with shorter travel times.

Playa del Carmen Hotels – My Advice

• The absolute best hotels in Playa del Carmen are: Hotel Esencia (this is the most luxurious boutique hotel in the region, located on the pristine Xpu-Ha beach), El Dorado Maroma (my pick for the best adults-only resort, famous for its overwater bungalows), and Hotel Xcaret Mexico (the best family all-inclusive resort because it includes unlimited access to all Xcaret eco-parks).
• The best spots for travelers in the Playa del Carmen area are Downtown (the heart of the action for nightlife, shopping, and dining), North Playa del Carmen (the area near Calle 38 which is walking distance to downtown but much quieter), Mayakoba (a world-class luxury resort complex set in the mangroves north of town), South Riviera Maya (home to the best cenotes, jungle, and beaches on the way to Tulum), and North Riviera Maya (beaches and attractions like Puerto Morelos on the way to Cancun).
• Getting to Playa from Cancun Airport is easiest by driving, but if you are staying in the heart of downtown or only plan on leaving your resort for organized tours, it is probably not worth the expense to rent a car. Instead, I suggest taking the ADO bus or pre-booking a private shuttle. I recommend Private Transportation Riviera Maya for a reliable experience; a round-trip shuttle for a family of four from the airport to downtown Playa del Carmen now runs about 110 USD and takes roughly 50 minutes each way. The ADO bus remains the most budget-friendly option. Tickets are now approximately 250 pesos (14 USD) each for adults and 125 pesos (7 USD) for children. The same round-trip for a family of four would be about 84 USD and takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. Note that with the Tren Maya now operational, there is a station at the airport and another on the outskirts of Playa del Carmen (west of the highway), but for most travelers staying downtown, the ADO bus or a private shuttle is still more convenient for getting directly to your hotel.
• Playa del Carmen is compact and very easy to navigate on foot, with the majority of restaurants and shops located within a 3 km stretch. There is still no Uber here due to local regulations, but taxis are plentiful. You can find them at designated taxi stands (sitios) or flag them down on the street. Taxis in Playa do not use meters; instead, they use a zone-based system. Drivers should carry a rate chart printed in pesos. While they will accept US dollars, the rate they give you will always be worse than the official exchange, so I strongly advise paying in local currency. Always confirm the price with the driver before you get in the car to avoid surprises.
• Pay in pesos. This is one of my most consistent pieces of advice for Mexico. Almost every business accepts US dollars, but they set their own exchange rates which are never in your favor. You will effectively pay a 10 to 15 percent premium on everything if you use dollars. Use bank-affiliated ATMs (like BBVA or Santander) to withdraw pesos and avoid the independent machines on the street which have higher fees and lower security.
• If you choose to rent a car to explore the cenotes or ruins on your own, you will find driving here straightforward. The main highway (Carretera Federal 307) is well-maintained and easy to follow via GPS. In downtown Playa, be aware that many streets have shifted to a parquímetros (parking meter) system; look for the machines and display your ticket on the dash to avoid being booted. Two local driving quirks to watch for are topes and retornos. Topes are speed bumps that can be incredibly steep and poorly marked; treat every yellow sign or painted line on the road as a potential suspension-breaker. To make a left turn on the highway, you usually cannot just turn left across traffic. You must use a retorno. This involves driving past your turn, entering a dedicated U-turn lane or overpass on the right, and then looping back to approach your destination from the opposite direction. It feels counter-intuitive at first but keeps highway traffic moving safely.

This resort is made up of four hotels, each with a different vibe: Kantenah is Maya-styled, Colonial is Spanish, White Sand is contemporary and wellness-focused, and TRS Yucatan is the top-line, adults-only wing. All sections have beach access, but Kantenah and Colonial have most of the beachfront rooms and suites. White Sand is closest to the kids’ clubs (three of them for babies, kids, and teens), awesome water park, and comprehensive spa. Royal Suites are surrounded by the lagoon, many with their own jetties and canoes. Suite options can include outdoor showers, whirlpool tubs, and private pools; connecting rooms are available. Situated on a long stretch of beach near Akumal, several cenotes, and adventure parks, about halfway to Tulum.

20. Valentin Imperial – North Riviera Maya

Grand, adults-only, all-inclusive hotel on a full kilometer of beach, offering three free form pools, a tranquil spa, and twenty restaurants and bars. Suites are complete with a whirlpool tub and balcony or terrace, some with outdoor Jacuzzis. Swim up suites all connect to the lazy river in the quietest part of the resort. Food is phenomenal, especially at Ginger, the Japanese restaurant (reservations required for seats at the teppanyaki table), and L’Alsace, the French fine dining spot (with a dress code). This hacienda-style resort faces a kilometer-long beach with soft sand and great swimming along its length, except when occasional bigger waves arrive, as well as snorkeling in a man-made reef at the southwest end of the beach.

21. Rosewood – Mayakoba

Elite, family-friendly, five-star resort featuring three crystal pools, exquisite dining, and a tranquil spa, all on a soft beach with deep blue waters. Staying in Downtown Playa del Carmen

Formerly a small fishing village, Playa experienced a huge tourism and population boom after the Cozumel ferry began service here. Since 1995 the residential population has grown by ten times, with most people now working in the tourism industry serving the millions of travelers coming through the hundreds of new hotels and resorts that have sprung up. Downtown is home to a plethora of resorts, mostly set up along the long public beach that runs the full length of the town and beyond.

Downtown Playa is known for its lively atmosphere, especially along Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue), the beachfront, and Calle 12 Norte. Quinta Avenida runs for four kilometers, beginning at Paseo del Carmen mall in the southwest and ends near the Paradisus Resorts at its northwest end. The first three or so kilometers are pedestrian-only, each side lined with malls, street vendors, the city’s best restaurants, and relaxed bars. The newest and flashiest part of the town is here, near the Quinta Alegria mall. The beachfront is home to several beach clubs, with lots of music, cocktails, and bites; the best among them are Mamita’s Beach Club and Coralina Daylight Club. Downtown is also the nightlife hub, with tons of nightclubs lining Calle 12 Norte, north of the Cozumel Ferry terminal. The biggest clubs are Coco Bongo, Mandala, and La Vaquita, all of which have sister properties in Cancun, but the best one is Diablito Cha Cha Cha.

At the far end of Quinta Avenida, the North Playa area is home to several luxury resorts, residences, and restaurants, along a stunning stretch of beach. This area is substantially less populated than downtown while still being easily accessible, just a twenty or thirty-minute walk into downtown (depending on the resort) or a quick ten-minute drive. This is an ideal spot for travelers looking to have all the varied experiences that the city has to offer, while still far enough from the party atmosphere for a peaceful rest.

Staying in Mayakoba

This is a luxury resort complex just outside of Playa del Carmen’s north end. Its design incorporates the natural geography of the area, with cenotes, lagoons, and a sandy beach, and is home to a variety of native animals, including coati, iguanas, spider monkeys, and tropical birds. The complex includes a PGA golf course and El Pueblito village, designed after a traditional Mexican city square with a chapel, art gallery, and restaurants. Most people get around via the boat taxi on the lagoon, included in the hotel rates, but guests can also go on foot or use the bikes provided by the resorts to ride along the nature trail.

Staying in North Riviera Maya

Riviera Maya runs the length of the coast, from just south of Cancun to just south of Tulum, with Playa del Carmen in the middle. It also includes the island Cozumel. The stretch of beach on the mainland is fronted by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, running from Cancun all the way down to Guatemala.

The North Riviera Maya, between Playa and Cancun, is home to some of the largest all-inclusive resorts. Most of these sit in mangrove jungles on long stretches of beach protected by the reef, making for mostly gentle waves. Outside of the two main towns here, Puerto Morelos and Punta Maroma, the resort beaches are nearly private, because they’re not walking distance to anything. Near Puerto Morelos, the more northerly of the towns, travelers will find a botanical garden and Croco Cun Zoo, with several refreshing cenotes just inland. Punta Maroma has a more pristine beach, as well as dolphin encounters and more at Maroma Adventures.

The South Riviera Maya, between Playa and Tulum, has long swathes of white sand beach, protected by the reef and Cozumel, making the waves extra soft. Hotels here are set into the jungle and fronted by kilometers of unspoiled beaches. The main town between Playa and Tulum is Puerto Aventuras, with a Dolphin Discovery park, along with restaurants and resorts. Some of the biggest draws to South Riviera Maya are the adventure parks, such as Xel-Ha, Xcaret, and Río Secreto. This is also home some of the biggest, most popular cenotes: Dos Ojos, Jardin del Eden, Cenote Azul, and many more.

Where should I stay in Puerto Escondido?

The main areas to stay include the tourist areas of Puerto Escondido itself (along the beach, Playa Principal or around El Adoquín); along the main surf zone at Playa Zicatela; more rustic La Punta, 3km further south at the far end of Zicatela; and the more residential area of Rinconada, west of the city center, closer to the smaller beaches hemmed in by cliffs. I prefer the tranquility and beaches of Rinconada, but surfers will want to stay closer to the action in Zicatela. 

My favorite hotels close to the town center include the Hotel Paraíso Escondido at Unión 10, with fine views and great facilities, and the budget Paziflora Hostel at Primera Sur 309, run by an incredibly friendly family.

Along Zicatela beach I like the luxurious Casa Joseph Zicatela, the charming and family-friendly Hotel Santa Fe, and the trendy Punta Zicatela, farther south on La Punta beach where it’s a little quieter.

In and around Rinconada the best place to stay is the semi-luxurious Villas Carrizalillo (my favorite hotel in the Puerto Escondido area), perched above a glorious beach.

Staying in Puerto Escondido – Tips & Info

Puerto Escondido is a laid-back resort town on the Pacific coast of Mexico, and one of our favorite places to go in the country. It is best known for its wonderful beaches, tropical setting, surf scene (it’s the home of the “Mexican Pipeline”), and scuba diving.

Where is Puerto Escondido?
Puerto Escondido is a small resort city and port in the southeastern Mexican state of Oaxaca, facing the Pacific Ocean. It lies about 250 km south of Oaxaca City, 380 km southeast of Acapulco, and around 650 km southeast of Mexico City. Non-stop flights to Puerto Escondido take 1 hour 35 minutes from Guadalajara, 1 hour 15 minutes from Mexico City and just 30 minutes from Oaxaca City.

How big is Puerto Escondido?
Puerto Escondido has a population of around 45,000. The city center is quite small, with the primary tourist area focused on a small bay (“Bahía Principal”) and the adjacent strip along Avenida Alfonso Pérez Gasga (known simply as “El Adoquín”). The main business district (“Centro”) is clustered around Hwy-200 just to the north.

What is the history of Puerto Escondido?
Puerto Escondido is a relatively recent creation, though indigenous peoples such as the Mixtecs have populated the surrounding country for thousands of years. A small fishing community existed by the late 19th century, but the town didn’t start developing properly until the 1930s. It wasn’t until the 1960s that Highway 200 was completed, linking Escondido with the outside world by road for the first time. In the 1970s it started to develop as a low-key surfer and backpacker resort, and the population jumped from a few hundred to several thousand. Today the tourist facilities are far more developed, though it remains relatively rustic and laid-back compared to big resorts such as Cancún or Los Cabos.

How do I get to Puerto Escondido?
Puerto Escondido is connected to Oaxaca City, Mexico City, and Guadalajara by non-stop flights. The daily flights from Oaxaca on Aerotucán, or with Captain Vega (+52 954 588 0062), save significant time. These are small Cessna aircraft with a strict 15kg luggage limit. Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM) lies around 4km northwest of Bahía Principal. A shared taxi (colectivo) to the city center costs around 50 to 80 pesos.

The new highway (Autopista Barranca Larga-Ventanilla) has fundamentally transformed road travel, reducing the journey between Oaxaca City and Puerto Escondido to approximately 3 hours (down from 7 hours). This modern toll road bypasses the old, winding mountain passes. First class ADO and OCC buses, along with several suburban van lines, use this route frequently. The modern ADO/OCC bus terminal is on the Carretera Costera (Hwy-200), a short walk from El Adoquín. Buses from Acapulco still take around 8 hours.

Can I drive to Puerto Escondido?
Yes, though I don’t generally recommend it for vacationers. While many drive the Pacific coast, safety can be a concern in certain regions, and highway robberies have been reported at night. The drive from the US border is long (over 1500 km) and the mountain roads, while improved by the new highway from Oaxaca, still require careful navigation. Flying is much more efficient.

Do I need a car in Puerto Escondido?
No. It’s easy and cheap to get around on foot, by bus, or taxi. Taxis are plentiful; always agree on the price before starting the trip. Short trips in town should be around 40 to 50 pesos, while trips to La Punta or Playa Bacocho are 60 to 80 pesos. You can also take a lancha (water taxi) from Playa Principal to nearby coves like Carrizalillo for around 100 to 150 pesos.

When is the best time to go to Puerto Escondido?
The best weather is from December to April when it is sunny and dry. The rainy season runs from June to October, which brings high humidity and occasional tropical storms. For surfers, the peak season for big swells is May to September. Peak prices and crowds occur during Christmas, Semana Santa (Easter week), and the November surf tournaments.

What are the best beaches in Puerto Escondido?

Playa Zicatela is the world-famous heart of the surf scene. It’s a massive stretch of sand with powerful waves and excellent beach bars. Beginners should head to La Punta at the southern end, where the waves are smaller and the vibe is more “boho-chic.” For swimming, head to the rocky coves west of town. My favorite is Playa Carrizalillo, a stunning turquoise bay reached by 170 stone steps. It’s perfect for swimming and beginner surf lessons. Nearby Puerto Ángelito and Playa Manzanillo are also great for families, offering calm water and plenty of seafood palapas.

For peace and quiet, head further west to Playa Bacocho. It’s a huge, empty beach perfect for sunset walks, though the current is often too strong for swimming. This is also where the turtle release programs usually take place.

Playa Principal is the local hub where fishing boats dock. It’s great for people-watching but less ideal for swimming due to boat traffic. Playa Marinero, located between Principal and Zicatela, is a good compromise for those wanting to swim near the town center.

What are the best things to do in Puerto Escondido?
Most activities center on the water. Beyond surfing, I highly recommend a bioluminescence tour at Laguna Manialtepec, especially during a new moon. Ecoadventures and Robert’s Ecotours are both excellent for nature trips, including dolphin watching and seasonal whale spotting. Releasing baby sea turtles at Playa Bacocho (usually around 5pm) is a highlight for many visitors.

For those looking for adventure, Skydive Puerto Escondido offers jumps with landings on the sand. If you want to dive, Deep Blue Dive is the go-to shop. For a break from the sun, Puerto Food Tours offers a great deep dive into Oaxacan cuisine in the local markets.

What are the restaurants like?
The food scene is fantastic and very affordable. El Cafecito (on both Zicatela and in Rinconada) is a legendary spot for breakfast. Dan’s Café Deluxe is another favorite for its relaxed garden vibe. For something more modern, Sativa on Zicatela offers great seafood and cocktails with a view. For the best view in town, head to Espadín at sunset—the food is upscale Mexican and the vista over Carrizalillo is unbeatable. In La Punta, you’ll find a high concentration of trendy Thai, fish taco, and vegan spots.

What currency is used in Puerto Escondido?
Mexican pesos are essential. While larger hotels and restaurants in Zicatela and Rinconada take cards, many smaller spots and taxis are cash-only. Use bank-affiliated ATMs (like Santander or Banamex) in the Centro area for the best security. Avoid standalone ATMs on the street or in bars.

Is Puerto Escondido expensive?
No, it remains one of Mexico’s more affordable coastal destinations. You can find everything from $20 USD dorm beds to $300 USD luxury villas. Street food and local “comedores” in the market are very cheap, while beachside dining is moderately priced.

Is Puerto Escondido safe?
Yes, it is very safe for tourists. Petty theft is the most common issue. Never leave your bags unattended on the beach while you swim. At night, stick to well-lit areas in Zicatela, La Punta, or Rinconada, and take a taxi if you are traveling between these zones late at night.

• Cancún has some wonderful 5-star resorts that I love, but it is a destination dominated by massive all-inclusive properties. For smaller boutique hotels with more character, I prefer to stay in Tulum and Isla Mujeres. These are two of my favorite beach destinations in Mexico for a more intimate and laid-back vibe.

• The best places to stay in Cancún include Playa Mujeres for the newest luxury resorts and quiet beaches, and Riviera Cancún for great family-friendly resorts near cenotes. Puerto Juárez is the gateway to the Isla Mujeres ferry and is home to the upscale Puerto Cancún development which features a luxury mall, golf courses, and marinas. The Hotel Zone is the primary tourist hub, shaped like a number 7 along Boulevard Kukulkan. It is divided into three areas: the North has the softest sand and calmest water, the Middle is close to major shopping and nightlife, and the South is the quietest area and is furthest from the main bars.
• Most activities and tours are centered in the Hotel Zone. The most efficient way to get around or reach downtown is by bus. Two main lines, the R-1 and R-2, run every few minutes 24/7. To use them, simply flag down a bus at any marked stop. Catch the bus on the beach side of the road to head toward downtown, or on the lagoon side to head toward the airport area. The fare is 12 pesos (about $0.60 USD). You can pay in US dollars, but the rate is $1 per person and no change is given, so pesos are much better. Tickets are provided as proof of purchase but do not allow for transfers. If you change buses, you must pay again. Since stops are not announced, I recommend tracking your progress on GPS or asking the driver for your specific stop. To exit, move to the rear and press the red button or tell the driver Alto.

Once the main population center of the area before Cancún was established as a city, Puerto Juárez has a fantastic location. This neighborhood sits between downtown and the North Hotel Zone and is home to the ferry to Isla Mujeres. Visitors here will find a golf course, marinas, and a luxury mall, Puerto Cancún, with both land and water access to its shops. Hotels, condos, and restaurants on the beach mostly fall into the luxury category, but head just a tad inland to find affordable, traditional restaurants and places to stay. Though there is plenty of beachfront here, the sand isn’t as thick and white, and the water isn’t as radiantly blue as in the Hotel Zone. Still, this is a wonderful place to stay to see the more authentic side of Cancún, while still being close to the water.

• The best areas for visitors are the North End, also known as Centro, and the South End or Punta Sur. The North End is the most walkable part of the island, home to the famous Playa Norte beach, bustling pedestrian streets like Avenida Hidalgo, and the majority of the island’s nightlife and dining. The South End is much quieter and more rugged, offering spectacular cliffside views and a more relaxed pace. The middle of the island, including the Mar Caribe and Bahia neighborhoods, offers a more local feel and is where you will find larger grocery stores and some excellent hidden gem restaurants.
• Getting to Isla Mujeres from Cancun is straightforward via the Ultramar ferry or the newer Xcaret Xailing service. The crossing from Puerto Juárez takes about 25 minutes. If you are coming from Cancun International Airport, I recommend booking a private transfer to the Puerto Juárez terminal in advance. I have used Happy Shuttle many times and find them reliable. They can bundle your ferry tickets with the ride to save you from waiting in the ticket line at the pier. Ferries from Puerto Juárez run every 30 minutes from early morning until late night. There are also ferry departures from the Cancun Hotel Zone (Playa Tortugas, Playa Caracol, and El Embarcadero), but these are more expensive, run less frequently, and take longer to reach the island.
• Getting around the island is best done by golf cart, which is the primary mode of transport for tourists. You can find several rental agencies directly across from the ferry pier, but they do sell out during peak season so I suggest booking ahead if possible. You will need a valid driver’s license to rent one. If you stay in the North End (Centro), you likely do not need a cart for your entire stay as everything is walkable. However, I suggest renting one for at least one day to explore the southern loop. Key stops include the Garrafon Natural Reef Park, the cliffside path at Punta Sur near the Ixchel Temple ruins, and the Tortugranja turtle sanctuary. If you are staying mid-island, you are in a bit of a “no man’s land” where you are too far to walk to the north or south, so a cart or frequent taxi use is necessary.
• Taxis on Isla Mujeres are easy to spot as they are all red vehicles. You will find the main taxi rank right outside the ferry terminal. While they are not metered, there is an official rate board posted at the stand showing prices to different zones of the island. I always recommend confirming the price with the driver before you get in the car to avoid any confusion. Taxis are plentiful and can be flagged down on any main road. Note that most taxis operate as a colectivo service for locals, but for tourists, they usually function as private hires. Expect to pay more for late-night trips.
• Use Mexican Pesos for all transactions to get the best value. While many places on Isla Mujeres accept U.S. Dollars, the exchange rate used by shops and restaurants is significantly worse than the official bank rate. You will save roughly 10 percent to 15 percent by paying in local currency. There are several ATMs on the island, but I recommend using the ones located inside banks near the ferry pier or the large Chedraui grocery store mid-island for better security and lower fees.

Staying in Playa del Carmen – The Basics

• In conversation, Playa del Carmen usually gets shortened to “Playa,” which translates to “beach” but refers to the entire city and the surrounding resort areas. While it was once a small fishing village, it is now the heartbeat of the Riviera Maya. The city is located in the state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula. The Tren Maya is now fully operational, making it much easier to reach nearby destinations like Valladolid, Merida, and the ruins at Chichen Itza via the Playa del Carmen station located west of the highway.
• Playa del Carmen is roughly divided into several key areas for visitors. Downtown is the most popular, consisting of El Centro and the famous Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue), a several-mile-long pedestrian street lined with shops and restaurants. Playacar is a gated residential and resort area just south of the pier, great for families. North Playa del Carmen (near Calle 38 and CTM) is quieter, more local, and has a much better beach than downtown. Mayakoba is a high-end luxury complex north of the city set within mangroves. The North and South Riviera Maya encompass the massive all-inclusive resorts and cenotes spread along the coast toward Cancun and Tulum.
• I recommend focusing your time around Quinta Avenida for the best energy, but keep in mind that the beaches in the very center of town can suffer from erosion and crowds. For the best sand and water, head north of Calle 38 or south into the Playacar phase one area. Also, be aware of sargassum (seaweed) which typically impacts the coast from April through August; many high-end resorts now use barriers to keep their specific beachfronts clear.

• The water is generally calmest from Mayakoba down to Akumal because Cozumel sits directly offshore and acts as a natural breakwater. If you want crystal clear water for snorkeling, I suggest taking the 45-minute ferry from the downtown pier over to Cozumel for a day trip.
• Pay in pesos. While USD is accepted almost everywhere, the exchange rate offered by shops and restaurants is usually terrible. You will save 10 to 15 percent on your entire trip just by using local currency. Use bank-affiliated ATMs (like Santander or BBVA) rather than the “no-name” machines on the street to avoid high fees and skimming.
• Getting to Playa from Cancun Airport (CUN) is straightforward. I do not recommend renting a car if you are staying downtown as parking is difficult and the area is very walkable. Instead, take the ADO bus or pre-book a shuttle. I recommend Private Transportation Riviera Maya for families. A private van for four people costs about 130 USD round-trip and takes 50 minutes. The ADO bus is the budget choice; tickets are now roughly 270 pesos (15 USD) per person. Buses leave the airport every 20 to 30 minutes. Buy your tickets at the official ADO stand after exiting customs; do not buy them online in advance because your flight might be delayed.
• Within the city, walking is your best bet. Quinta Avenida is entirely pedestrian-only. For longer trips, taxis are plentiful but do not have meters. Always confirm the price in pesos before you get in the car. Drivers carry a rate card based on zones, but prices are often higher if you hail a cab from a “sitio” (official stand) or a hotel entrance. Flagging a cab on a side street a block or two away from the main tourist drag is usually cheaper. Note that Uber does not operate in Playa del Carmen due to local regulations.

If you visit between April and August, be mindful of sargassum (seaweed); North Playa and the private resorts in Mayakoba usually do the best job of clearing it.
• Best Places for Families: For a stress-free family vacation, I recommend the gated luxury of Mayakoba or the large resorts in the South Riviera Maya near Akumal. These areas offer calm, shallow water perfect for young children and extensive kids’ clubs. North Riviera Maya is excellent for families with teenagers who want more active water sports and larger pool complexes, though the waves there can be slightly stronger.
• Best Places for Living Like a Local: To find the “real” Playa, head west of 10th Avenue. The area around 30th Avenue is where you will find the best authentic food at a fraction of the prices on the tourist strip. I recommend visiting the street food stalls for cochinita pibil or heading to Punta Esmeralda, a beach at the north end of town with a small freshwater cenote where local families gather to swim and picnic.
• Best Places for Dining and Nightlife: Downtown is the undisputed center of the action, with the highest concentration of bars and clubs located on Calle 12. If you want great food without the thumping bass of the nightclubs, North Playa is the better choice. I consider Calle 38 in North Playa to be the most beautiful street in the city, lined with trees and some of the area’s most creative and high-quality restaurants.
• Best Places for Shopping: Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) is the primary shopping artery, running for several kilometers through town. The southern section near the Playacar entrance features the Paseo del Carmen outdoor mall, while the central area near Calle 12 is packed with international brands and souvenir shops. For a more upscale experience, the Quinta Alegria mall at the corner of Calle 16 is the main landmark. Most shops are open late, usually until 10:00 or 11:00 PM.
• Best Places for Short Trips: If you only have a few days, stay in Downtown or Mayakoba. Downtown’s walkability ensures you don’t waste time in traffic, and the proximity to the ferry makes a Cozumel day trip effortless. The Tren Maya station on the outskirts of Playa makes it possible to take a high-speed day trip to the colonial city of Valladolid or the Chichen Itza ruins without the long bus rides of the past. Mayakoba is also excellent for short stays because its internal boat and bike network means you never have to leave the complex to experience the jungle and sea.

Most of the action is centered in the downtown area, which I define as the grid between the beach and the main highway, stretching from the gated community of Playacar in the south up to the local favorite Punta Esmeralda beach in the north. This central hub is where you will find the highest concentration of hotels, from high-end boutiques to budget-friendly guesthouses. The town remains remarkably safe for travelers, though it is much busier than it was even five years ago. The arrival of the Tren Maya has made Downtown even more convenient as a base; the train station is located just west of the highway, making it easy to hop on a high-speed rail to Tulum, Cancun, or the colonial charm of Valladolid.

Downtown is perfect if you want to be within walking distance of everything. You don’t need a car here. The primary artery is Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue), a massive pedestrian street that runs for about 5 kilometers. I recommend sticking to the sections between Calle 2 and Calle 40 for the best mix of dining and shopping. For a more modern, upscale feel, head toward the Quinta Alegria Mall. If you are a light sleeper, be very careful about booking a hotel near Calle 12 Norte; this is the epicenter of the nightlife scene with massive clubs like Coco Bongo and Mandala pumping music until the early hours. For families or those wanting a quieter beach, the Playacar Phase 1 and Phase 2 areas offer much wider stretches of sand and a more relaxed, residential vibe while still being a 10 to 15-minute walk from the ferry pier.

As you move north of Punta Esmeralda toward the Xcalacoco area, the city noise fades away. This section of Playa is characterized by a mix of luxury all-inclusives and upscale residential developments. I recommend North Playa for travelers who want the amenities of a large resort but still want to be a short taxi ride or a 30-minute beach walk from the downtown dining scene. The beaches here are generally wider and less eroded than those in the center of town. It feels more secluded and “tropical” because many of the properties have preserved the surrounding jungle and mangroves. It is a much better area for a quiet evening on the sand than anywhere near the ferry pier.

Mayakoba is in a category of its own. It is a massive, ultra-luxury eco-development built into the mangroves and lagoons just north of the city. What makes this area special is how the resorts are integrated into the natural ecosystem. You can move between the different hotels via an electric canal boat (lancha) or by using the extensive network of bike paths. It is incredibly serene and offers a level of privacy you won’t find in Downtown. I love that you can see coatis, spider monkeys, and exotic birds just by walking from your room to breakfast.

While it is a self-contained world with its own PGA golf course and the “El Pueblito” village center, you are still only 15 to 20 minutes from the heart of Playa del Carmen by taxi. I suggest staying here if you want a true escape where the service is world-class and the environment is pristine. The beach at Mayakoba is one of the best-maintained in the region, and because it is private, you won’t be bothered by vendors or crowds.

The stretch of coast between Playa del Carmen and Cancun is dominated by some of the most impressive all-inclusive resorts in the country. If you are staying here, you are likely looking for a “resort-focused” trip where you spend most of your time on-site. However, the charming fishing village of Puerto Morelos is a great exception. It has a much more laid-back, bohemian vibe than Playa or Cancun. The reef here is part of a protected National Marine Park, so the snorkeling is excellent and easily accessible from the beach.

Puerto Morelos is also home to great attractions like the Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín Botanical Garden. For families, staying in this northern section is convenient because it cuts your travel time from the Cancun airport down to about 20 or 30 minutes. If you plan to snorkel with the turtles, please note that there are now strict conservation rules in place: you must wear a life jacket, keep a 2-meter distance, and in most areas, you are required to be with a certified guide to protect the ecosystem.

This area is also the gateway to the massive eco-adventure parks like Xcaret and Xel-Ha. Los Cabos with Kids – My Advice

• The best restaurant in Cabo San Lucas is Edith’s. It is located just a block back from Medano Beach. It is expensive and you must make a reservation well in advance, but the mesquite-grilled steaks and local seafood are excellent. The outdoor garden setting is very colorful and authentic.
• The best restaurant in San Jose del Cabo is La Lupita. It has great gourmet tacos and a fun, trendy atmosphere with live music most nights. It is located right in the center of the Art District. There is now a second location in Cabo San Lucas near the marina which is also very good.
• The Los Tamarindos Cooking Course is a fun and hands-on experience on an organic farm just outside of San Jose del Cabo. It is very kid-friendly if your children enjoy being outdoors and seeing where food comes from. You get to walk the farm and pick your own ingredients before the cooking lesson.
• The best zip line is at Wild Canyon adventure park. The lines are very high and long. The park also has a great suspension bridge and an animal sanctuary that is a hit with younger children.
• The Cabo Half-Day Luxury Sailing Adventure with Snorkeling is my favorite way to see the coastline. The tour takes you past the Arch and Land’s End. The staff is helpful with kids and the lunch and open bar are high quality. It is easy to find at the Cabo San Lucas marina.

Isla Mujeres Hotels for Families – My Advice

• Playa Norte (above) is the absolute best spot for families with young children. The water is shallow, clear, and calm, making it more like a giant swimming pool than the open ocean. If you want the easiest vacation possible, stay at a hotel directly on this beach so you can walk from your room to the water in seconds.
• Decide between the North End (Centro) and the South End (Punta Sur) based on your pace. The North End is where all the action is, with pedestrian-only streets, dozens of restaurants, and the best beach. The South End is much quieter and more rugged, which is great if your priority is more space and a private pool, though you will need a golf cart to get anywhere.
• A golf cart is the best way to see the island, but you do not need one for your entire stay if you are in the North End. I suggest renting one for a single day to do a loop of the island. You will need a valid driver’s license, and during the busy winter months, it is smart to reserve one a day or two in advance.
• For modern kid-friendly fun, check out the Zazil Ha water park near the north end, which has great fountains and slides for younger kids. For older kids and teens, the Kin Ha Beach Club on the south end is the top pick because of its ocean slides, climbing wall, and pier jumping. Note that the old Turtle Farm (Tortugranja) has been closed for some time, so do not plan a trip there.
• Two-bedroom suites are the “gold standard” for families on the island but they are in short supply. Ixchel Beach Hotel and Nautibeach offer the best versions of these. They sell out months in advance, especially for the Christmas and Spring Break periods, so book as soon as your dates are firm.
